About Ashtanga

Ashtanga yoga is a breathing and movement system to purify the body and mind devised by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois  (Guruji). It comes from Mysore, India where it's still taught today by Guruji's family.

Ashtanga is a set sequence of postures, starting with the primary series, followed by intermediate and advanced A (the third series). The difference between the Ashtanga and other styles of yoga is that Ashtanga is taught as an open-practice where students memorize the asanas. There are also led classes postures are called out to help ensure the pracitioner's breath count, gaze and asanas are correct.

Since Ashtanga offers a custom approach to yoga, it's meant for all -- beginner and advanced, young and old, sick and healthy. The most important thing is to practice regularly.

Joy Is My Armor teaches in the the tradition of Richard Freeman and Manju Jois, which is joyful with an emphasis on the internal form.
